What to Expect

Tooth Extraction

When a tooth can't be saved, removing it promptly protects the surrounding teeth and bone. Here's what the process looks like from start to finish.

Total visits: 3–4 appointments
Healing timeline: Soft tissue: 1–2 weeks | Bone: 3–6 months

Extraction is recommended when a tooth is too damaged or infected to save, causing problems for adjacent teeth, or needs to be removed before orthodontic treatment. Most extractions are straightforward. Wisdom teeth removal follows a similar process — see our wisdom tooth removal page for specifics.

Your Appointments, Step by Step

1

Consultation & Exam

30–45 min

Dr. Steven reviews your X-rays or CBCT scan, evaluates the tooth, and discusses why extraction is the right path. He'll explain the procedure, discuss whether a bone graft is recommended to preserve the socket for a future implant or bridge, and review your sedation options. You'll leave with a clear plan and timeline.

2

Extraction (+ Bone Graft if applicable)

30–60 min

The area is numbed thoroughly. Dr. Steven loosens the tooth using specialized elevators and removes it. If a bone graft was recommended, the grafting material is placed in the socket immediately after extraction and covered with a resorbable suture. The entire procedure is typically completed in under an hour. Sedation is available if desired.

3

Post-Op Check

10–15 min

A brief follow-up about two weeks after extraction to confirm the socket is healing properly, sutures have dissolved, and there are no signs of infection or dry socket. Questions and concerns are addressed here.

4

Healing Check

15–20 min

At 2–3 months post-extraction (or when bone graft integration is expected), Dr. Steven evaluates the healed site and confirms readiness for the next step — whether that's a dental implant, bridge, or other restoration.

What to Know Before You Come In

  • If you are receiving IV sedation, arrange a driver — you cannot drive yourself home
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to your extraction appointment
  • Eat a light meal beforehand unless sedation instructions say otherwise
  • Fill any prescribed medications before your appointment so they are ready when you get home
  • Ask Dr. Steven whether a bone graft is recommended for your socket — preserving bone at extraction time is far easier than rebuilding it later
  • Plan to rest the day of your procedure and avoid strenuous activity for 24–48 hours

Planning to replace the tooth? A bone graft placed at the time of extraction preserves bone volume and significantly improves implant outcomes. If a dental implant is in your future, discuss socket preservation at your consultation. Learn more about dental implants →
