What to Expect
Dental Crown
A crown protects and restores a tooth that can't be fixed with a filling. Most cases require two main appointments with a temporary crown in between.
A crown (cap) covers the entire visible portion of a tooth to restore strength, shape, and appearance. It's recommended when a tooth has too much decay or damage for a filling, after a root canal, or to anchor a dental bridge. With proper care, a well-placed crown lasts 15–20 years or more.
Your Appointments, Step by Step
Consultation & Exam
30–45 minDr. Steven evaluates the tooth, reviews X-rays, and confirms that a crown is the right treatment. He'll discuss material options (porcelain, ceramic, or zirconia), explain the process, and answer your questions. In many cases, this happens at the same appointment as your preparation if the need is straightforward.
Crown Preparation + Digital Scan + Temporary
60–90 minThe tooth is numbed and shaped to create room for the crown. Any decay is removed first. A digital scan (no messy impressions) captures the exact shape of the prepared tooth and surrounding teeth. A custom temporary crown is placed the same day to protect the tooth while your ceramic crown is fabricated in the lab. Most patients leave this appointment comfortable.
Crown Delivery
30–45 minThe temporary crown is removed and the tooth is cleaned. Dr. Steven checks the ceramic crown for fit, color match, and bite before cementing it permanently. Minor adjustments are made chairside if needed. The area is numbed so you are comfortable throughout. Once cemented, your new crown functions and is cared for just like a natural tooth.
Comfort Check (if needed)
10–15 minIf the bite feels slightly off after the final appointment or sensitivity lingers, a brief follow-up corrects it. Most patients don't need this step.
What to Know Before You Come In
- Eat normally before your preparation appointment
- Arrange transportation if you plan to use sedation — standard crown prep uses local anesthesia and requires no special transport
- You will have a temporary crown between appointments — avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods on that side
- Keep your crown delivery appointment — the longer the temporary stays in place, the greater the risk of it loosening
- After final placement, your crown can be brushed and flossed just like a natural tooth
