What to Expect

Immediate Implant

When conditions allow, the implant is placed the same day as the extraction — reducing the number of surgeries and compressing the overall timeline to 3–4 months.

Total visits: 4–6 appointments
Total timeline: 3–4 months (vs. 8+ months for staged approach)

Not every patient qualifies. Immediate implant placement requires adequate bone quality, no active infection at the extraction site, and anatomy that allows stable implant seating. Dr. Steven will evaluate your specific case with a CBCT scan and let you know whether this approach is appropriate.

The traditional implant process involves extracting the tooth, waiting 3–4 months for the socket to heal, then placing the implant and waiting another 3–4 months for integration before the crown. With an immediate implant, steps one and two are combined — reducing total treatment time significantly and eliminating a second surgery.

Your Appointments, Step by Step

1

Consultation + CBCT Scan

30–45 min

Dr. Steven evaluates whether your tooth is a candidate for immediate implant placement. Not every extraction site qualifies — the bone must be healthy enough and the anatomy must allow safe, stable implant placement at the time of extraction. A CBCT (3D) scan is taken to plan the procedure precisely.

2

Extraction + Implant Placement + Bone Graft

60–90 min

The failing tooth is removed and the implant is placed into the fresh socket in the same appointment — this is the key advantage of the immediate technique. A bone graft is placed around the implant to fill the gap between the implant and socket walls. After placement, you follow one of two routes: Route A (stable implant) — a healing abutment or temporary crown is placed the same day. Route B (less stable) — a cover screw is placed and the gum is sutured over the implant to protect it while it integrates.

3

Post-Op Check

10–15 min

A brief follow-up approximately two weeks after surgery to confirm healing, check sutures, and address any questions or concerns.

4

Healing Check + Scan

~30 min

At 2–3 months after placement, Dr. Steven confirms the implant has integrated with the bone and takes a digital scan for the final crown. Route A patients proceed directly to crown delivery. Route B patients need one more step.

5

Crown Delivery

20–30 min

Your custom implant crown is attached. Dr. Steven checks the fit, bite, and appearance before final seating. The crown looks and functions like a natural tooth.

6

Route B: Abutment Placement (if needed)

~20 min

For Route B patients only — a minor procedure uncovers the integrated implant and places a healing abutment. The gum shapes around it over 1–2 weeks before the final crown is delivered.

What to Know Before You Come In

  • Immediate implants require specific anatomy — confirm candidacy at your CBCT consultation before planning the timeline
  • Arrange a driver for the surgery day if you are using sedation
  • Fill any prescribed medications (antibiotics, pain relief) before your appointment
  • Plan to rest the day of the procedure; most patients return to normal activity the following day
  • If active infection is present at the extraction site, an immediate implant is generally not appropriate — discuss this with Dr. Steven
