Post-Op Instructions
After Your Crown Preparation
You have a temporary crown in place while your ceramic crown is being crafted. These instructions keep it secure and protect the prepared tooth.

1 Your Temporary Crown
Your temporary crown is held in place with a soft, temporary cement — it is not as strong as your ceramic crown and requires a little extra care.
Avoid sticky, chewy, or hard foods on that side: caramels, gum, hard candy, chewy bread, and raw vegetables can pull or crack the temporary.
Chew on the opposite side as much as possible until your ceramic crown is placed.
If your temporary crown comes off, do not panic — call us right away. Keep the temporary and bring it with you. Leaving the tooth uncovered for more than a day can cause shifting or sensitivity.
When flossing, slide the floss out sideways rather than snapping it up through the contact, which can lift the temporary off.
2 Sensitivity — What to Expect
Some degree of sensitivity to hot, cold, pressure, and sweets is completely normal after a crown preparation. The tooth has been shaped and the nerve may be mildly irritated.
Sensitivity is typically most noticeable in the first few days and gradually improves as you get closer to your ceramic crown appointment.
Over-the-counter ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) taken as directed is usually sufficient for managing discomfort.
If sensitivity is severe, worsening over time, or accompanied by spontaneous throbbing pain that wakes you at night, please call us — this can occasionally indicate the nerve requires additional attention.
3 Bite and Comfort
Your bite may feel slightly different or "high" after your appointment as the anesthesia wears off. A minor adjustment is often all that is needed and takes only a minute in the chair.
If your bite feels off after the numbness fully resolves — especially if chewing feels uneven or puts pressure on that tooth — call us to schedule a quick bite adjustment. Do not wait and hope it resolves on its own.
Jaw soreness from holding your mouth open during the procedure is normal and typically resolves within 1–2 days. Warm compresses and over-the-counter pain relief can help.
4 Keeping the Area Clean
Brush gently around the temporary crown twice daily. Keeping the area clean is important — bacteria at the gum line can cause sensitivity and affect the final fit of your ceramic crown.
Rinse with warm salt water (½ teaspoon of salt in 8 oz of warm water) if the gum tissue around the crown feels tender or irritated.
A small amount of gum tenderness around the prepared tooth is normal for a few days. If the gum tissue becomes significantly swollen, bleeds easily, or does not improve, let us know.
5 Managing Discomfort
For most patients, over-the-counter ibuprofen (400–600 mg with food, every 6–8 hours as needed) is the most effective option for post-prep soreness and sensitivity.
Acetaminophen (Tylenol 500 mg) can be taken at the same time as ibuprofen every 8 hours for additional relief if needed.
Avoid aspirin — it can thin the blood and prolong any minor gum bleeding around the preparation site.
6 Your Ceramic Crown Appointment
Your ceramic crown has been custom-fabricated from the impressions or scans taken at this visit. It is designed to fit your tooth precisely and match your surrounding teeth.
At your next appointment, the temporary will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your ceramic crown will be checked for fit, bite, and appearance before being cemented permanently.
Once cemented, your crown can be cared for just like a natural tooth — brush, floss, and attend regular hygiene visits. With proper care, a well-placed crown can last 15–20 years or more.
Please keep your ceramic crown appointment. The longer the temporary remains in place, the greater the chance of it loosening, the tooth shifting, or sensitivity increasing.
