Opalescence take-home whitening uses a 10% carbamide peroxide gel worn in custom-fitted trays overnight. The slow-release formula works while you sleep, delivering consistent, comfortable results. Because the trays are made from precise impressions of your teeth, the gel stays where it belongs — against your enamel, not on your gums.

This is MDRN Dental Studio's most popular whitening option. It's effective for everyday dietary staining (coffee, tea, red wine) and normal age-related yellowing. For deeper, more stubborn staining — including tetracycline staining — see our KöR Whitening guide →

Your Appointments, Step by Step

1

Consultation

~30 min

Dr. Steven evaluates your teeth, notes your current shade, and confirms you are a good candidate. Active cavities and gum disease must be addressed before whitening. He'll set realistic expectations for your results and review how existing crowns, veneers, or bonding on visible teeth will not change color — important to discuss before starting.

2

Custom Tray Fabrication

~20 min

A precise digital scan is taken to fabricate custom-fitted whitening trays. The trays are designed to hold gel in close contact with every tooth surface while minimizing contact with your gum tissue — which is what separates professional trays from over-the-counter options.

3

Take-Home Whitening Treatment

1–2 weeks at home (nightly)

You load a small dot of Opalescence 10% carbamide peroxide gel into each tooth compartment and wear the trays overnight — typically 6–8 hours. Results begin showing within the first few nights. Most patients reach their desired result within 8–14 nights. You stop when you are satisfied and save the remaining gel and trays for periodic touch-ups.

4

Follow-Up

15–20 min

A brief check-in to evaluate your result, answer questions, and discuss a maintenance plan. Touch-up gel is available when you need it — most patients do 1–2 nights of touch-up every few months to maintain the result.

What to Know Before You Start

  • Whitening only affects natural tooth structure — crowns, veneers, and bonding will not change color
  • Active cavities and gum disease must be treated before whitening begins
  • Some sensitivity during the first few nights is normal — use the provided CariFree toothpaste and take a night off if needed
  • Avoid coffee, tea, red wine, and deeply pigmented foods during the treatment period
  • Results vary based on your original shade and the nature of the staining — Dr. Steven will give you realistic expectations at your consultation
  • Save your trays after treatment — periodic touch-up nights with fresh gel maintain your result

Considering KöR? If you have more resistant staining, have tried whitening before without the results you wanted, or are looking for the most comprehensive whitening available, KöR may be the better option for your case. See the KöR guide →
